Carl A. moved south to warmer weather in search of a better job opportunity. Carl's southern trek led him to Santa Barbara, California where he found work as a ranch hand and was hired to help on local farms. It was here he learned the farming skills that would later help him raise his family. He also met his wife, Hannah Tuene, and was married in 1901.
